Software version 3.12.6 SUCKS (for s9)
It used to love my roomba S9. And then it updated to software version 3.12.6 on October 28, 2020. And then it lost its mind. And today I can’t connect to the iRobot cloud. After this horrible software update, my roomba takes literally hours to clean a 12x14 room, it has to recharge every 20 minutes, it has trouble docking, and it has trouble finishing rooms. I paid $1400 for this thing. I have sent numerous emails to customer service, And have gotten one reply that asked me how often I cleaned the brushes even though I specifically said I didn’t have ANY of these issues prior to this piece of shit software update. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous that iRobot is apparently using consumers as beta testers for their software, or sending out automatic software updates of software that is NOT good. And we can’t even opt out of the updates! I just want a working roomba again! And yes, I have cleaned/changed the the brushes and rollers, and changed the filter, using original iRobot parts. It’s been almost a month and I still do not have a useable roomba.
This is what my husband sent to them, documenting our issues:
The problems were noticed immediately after the robot software was updated to the 28-Oct release. Prior to this release Minion went about his business every day and required very little attention from us other than basic upkeep. Now he requires some form of human intervention every day.
The current software is crap and I would like to know how we can revert the software to the previous release.
My office is home based so I am pretty well tuned in to the behavior of Minion. Here is a detailed list of problem behaviors that we are seeing with the current software build:
Problems returning to dock: Robot has a lot more trouble to successfully locate the dock. Sometimes when returning home, it will drive completely in the wrong direction or drive off into some obscure corner of the house before again attempting to return home. Robot gets close to the dock but is unable to complete the docking step. It drives up onto the ramp of the dock but the contacts have not been properly aligned. Seems like it might be coming into the dock at a crooked angle or shifted to one side instead of straight on. Location of the dock has not been changed. (this has been documented by multiple users on Reddit) When Minion's battery dies and leaves him stranded in the middle of the house somewhere (usually the kitchen), your app reports this as "job canceled" which is not correct. Many of the jobs in the history that show up as "canceled" were in fact the robot stranded in the house somewhere with a dead battery. You will not see many jobs in the history which were canceled prior to October 28th.
Navigation changes for the worse: Stops and does an about face when no obstacles are present, this happens often with latest software release. (this has been documented repeatedly on Reddit) This happens both while cleaning and also when attempting to return to the dock (blue spinning LEDs). Straight lines have turned into serpentine lines. Why?
Changes to cleaning routine: It would appear that there was a change to the battery management because it often has to return to recharge in the middle of a cleaning cycle, and this was not an issue prior to the 28-Oct software release. I have even tried shortening up the jobs and it still is unable to manage basic tasks without constant help from a human. It takes much longer to do the same area. You should be able to see this if you review the cleaning job history rooms vs time. Based on the tone of the motor is appears that the suction has been turned down. Please explain how the suction has been turned down but yet the battery can't stay charged for a full job. Many times the robot will need to dock to recharge in the middle of a cycle, which it did not need to do prior to the 28-Oct release. Since it now has trouble to dock with the base station (see above), many jobs end with the robot "stuck" in the middle of an open room because the battery is dead. Also, how do we disable any future software updates without our prior approval? I would prefer to let someone else beta test new releases.
