Polish Ekstraklasa 2019/2020 - league guide and all teams previews (part 1/2)

Welcome to the next guide to Polish Ekstraklasa. This time it will be more serious as I don't want to repeat same jokes every year. For more comedy and league spirit, check out the guides from last year (1, 2). The new season will kick off tomorrow.

Basic information

Country: Poland First season: 1927 Number of teams: 16 Relegation to: Fortuna I Liga Current champions: Piast Gliwice (1st title) Most championships: Górnik Zabrze, Wisła Kraków (14 titles each) Most caps: Łukasz Surma (559, 1996-2017) Top scorer: Ernest Pohl (186, 1954-1967)

There are 16 clubs in the Ekstraklasa. During the course of the season each club plays the others twice, once at their home stadium and once at that of their opponents, for a total of 30 games. From the 2013/2014 season onward after 30th round league splits into "championship group" (top eight teams) and "relegation group" (bottom eight teams). Each team plays seven more games (teams ranked 1–4 and 9–12 play four times at home). The bottom three teams will be relegated to Fortuna I Liga, while the winner will play in Champions League qualifiers. The 2nd and 3rd placed teams will take part in Europa League qualifiers. The team that finishes 4th can only enter the qualification process of the Europa League if the winner of Polish Cup finishes in the TOP 3.
- Since this season three teams will be relagated from Ekstraklasa to I Liga, not two as before. Two teams will advance directly from I Liga to Ekstraklasa, while teams from 3-6 places will fight in a play-off where the winner will be awarded with a promotion.
- There must be at least one player born in 1998 or later on the pitch in each team.

2018/2019 table

Finished season was a disappointment for Arka and its unreasonable owner. Before its start, club fired successful coach Leszek Ojrzyński, during whose rule Arka won Polish Cup and two Super Cups. He lost his job due to the ugly style, which made the team unwatchable. Ojrzyński was replaced by the coach of the 2nd tier Stal Mielec, Zbigniew Smółka, who was known for his love for offensive style of play and possession of the ball. His attempts to change face of the team were unsuccessful. Instead, he started talking various idiotic things in the media (e.g. after losing game against Korona, he said that rivals "didn't want to play football" despite fact that Korona took 27 shots and Arka only 8). Smółka's only success was the restoration of chimeric playmaker Michał Janota, who finally started to play as well as he could. In winter, Arka loaned also central midfielder Marko Vejinović from AZ Alkmaar. It is mainly these players (and traditionally goalkeeper Pavels Steinbors) who made the biggest contribution to avoiding relegation. The sacking of Smółka in April and replacing him by experienced Jacek Zieliński also helped. In the end, Arka played its worst season in years and dismissal of Ojrzyński should be nominated for the Darwin Awards.
This season
This season is going to be even more difficult. The departure of Janota (Al-Fateh), Vejinović (return from loan) and Zarandia (Zulte Waregem) make Arka one of the weakest (if not the weakest) teams in Ekstraklasa. Their successors don't seem to present similar quality, although perhaps some of them could be useful. The weakest point of team is position of central forward. If new Dutch striker Fabian Serrarens turns out to be a transfer flop, Arka will remain with Jankowski (who plays better as a wingesecond striker) or Kolev and Siemaszko (who are slow like coal wagon and, to put it mildly, don't score much). The strengths of the team are goalkeeper Steinbors and coach Zieliński, who theoretically knows this league too well to be relegated. However, he has a very difficult challenge ahead of him.
Final prediction
Relegation. Direct competitors are simply better, you can find something good in each of them. Arka has a good coach, but that's not enough. Unless all new players turn out to be great.

Coach Michał Probierz achieved his goal and brought Cracovia to European competitions. However, it looked like it wasn't going to happen for a long time. The beginning of the season was embarrassing for the team (the first match won only in 9th week). In another club coach would be simply fired, but Probierz has a special trust of the owner - he is even a vice-president. President Janusz Filipiak waited out the crisis and it paid off for him. It wasn't obvious, because in the past he was famous for his impatience. Captain Miroslav Covilo, who forced his transfer to Lugano, left the team. Another significant problem was to find a suitable successor for Krzysztof Piątek, who left for Genoa. Gerard Oliva quickly got seriously injured and Filip Piszczek didn't guarantee high quality. The situation was saved by the arrival of Airam Cabrera, the former striker of Korona Kielce, who proved his quality once again. After some time Cracovia rebounded from bottom of the table and started marching upwards. In the end, team took 4th place and takes part in the "kiss of death", as coach Probierz calls European competitions.
This season
The team has changed a bit. Creative midfielder Javi Hernandez will be replaced by Pelle van Amersfoort from Heerenveen. The successors of Airam Cabrera look worse. Rafael Lopes from Boavista played 165 matches in the Portuguese League, but scored only 17 goals. Rubio is mostly known for being less talented brother of Carlitos from Legia. Signing Czech defender David Jablonsky from Levski Sofia may be a good move. The strong points of the team is a central midfield and defence as a whole. The wings look problematic. Romanian international Sergiu Hanca has the quality, but the player of Poland U21 NT Mateusz Wdowiak is known for his inefficiency, and Bojan Čečarić looks like a transfer flop.
Final prediction
TOP 4. Cracovia is unlikely to end up on a lower position than this year. Ambitions of the club are growing and it would be a failure for Probierz.

Górnik Zabrze

Coach: Marcin Brosz Captain: Szymon Matuszek Most caps: Zygfryd Szołtysik (395, 1962-1978) Top scorer: Włodzimierz Lubański (155, 1963-1975) Debut: 1956 Biggest achievement: Champions (14 times: 1957, 1959, 1961, 1962/1963, 1963/1964, 1964/1965, 1965/1966, 1966/1967, 1970/1971, 1971/1972, 1984/1985, 1985/1986, 1986/1987, 1987/1988) Last season: 11th place Nickname(s): The Miners Stadium: Ernest Pohl Stadium (24 563) 2018/19 gif of the season: https://gfycat.com/pl/fortunatescentedgrayfox-football

After excellent 2017/18 season in which the returning Górnik took 4th place and had the best attack, the 2018/19 season was, as expected, much worse. After the sale of two wingers (Damian Kądzior to Dinamo Zagreb, Rafał Kurzawa to Amiens) and return of centre-back Mateusz Wieteska to Legia, they became a weaker team. The previous strategy of buying cheap Poles from lower leagues ceased to bring good results. After the autumn, the club was one of the main candidates for relegation. In winter many successful transfers were made. The club was joined by goalkeeper Martin Chudy from Spartak Trnava, right-back Boris Sekulić from CSKA Sofia and defensive midfielder Mateusz Matras from Zagłębie Lubin. However, the key was the loan of Georgia international, central midfielder Valerian Gvilia from FC Luzern. After the reinforcements, Górnik played much better and easily avoided relegation. Its best player (and the best striker of the whole league), Igor Angulo, became the top scorer with 24 goals. For the 35-year-old former footballer of Athletic Bilbao it was the third great season in Poland and there is not much to suggest that his good form would change.
This season
Similarly to Arka's case, this season may be even more difficult. Gvilia returned from the loan and immediately became a Legia player. Poland U21 NT player and the hope of Polish football, Szymon Żurkowski, left for Fiorentina. Out of the excellent three midfielders in Zabrze, only the least creative Matras remained. Jesus Jimenez can play on the left wing, but the right one is very poorly staffed. The departure of Dani Suarez makes weak defence even weaker. Górnik's hope is the wisdom and experience of coach Brosz, who always squeezes 100% of the people he has. However, if Angulo - unlikely - stops scoring, the destiny of the team will be clear.
Final prediction
Relegation or barely avoiding relegation. Hard to predict anything more.

Jagiellonia Białystok

Coach: Ireneusz Mamrot Captain: Taras Romanczuk Most caps: Rafał Grzyb (242, 2010-2019) Top scorer: Tomasz Frankowski (53, 1992-1993, 2009-2013) Debut: 1987/1988 Biggest achievement: Runners-up (2 times: 2016/2017, 2017/2018) Last season: 5th place Nickname(s): Jaga Stadium: Białystok City Stadium (22 372) 2018/19 gif of the season: https://streamable.com/nu1t3

After two golden seasons which Jagiellonia ended in 2nd place and fought for the championship until the end, a fall in form came. 5th position in the table was considered disappointing. However, it is not surprising, considering the year-round problems in attack. Irish Sheridan and Slovene Bezjak failed in autumn, so young Świderski usually played in the first eleven. What did Jagiellonia do in winter? They sold all of them. New striker Stefan Šćepović (former player of Sporting Gijon, Celtic and Getafe) turned out to be a transfer flop and another young player Klimala did not meet expectations. Nominal midfielder Jesus Imaz brought from Wisła Kraków had to play as striker. Other causes of quality decline in Jagiellonia are difficult to detect. The chance to save the season was winning the Polish Cup, but in the final team lost 0-1 to Lechia Gdańsk. So far, the club leadership decided not to fire coach Mamrot and give him another chance.
This season
Best player of the team, Lithuanian international Arvydas Novikovas joined Legia, but aside from that, Jagiellonia didn't lose anyone important. The team was joined by Miedź Legnica winger Juan Camara (who played against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League in 2015 as a Barcelona player), Tomáš Přikryl (potential successor of Novikovas who had a great season in Mlada Boleslav), Ognjen Mudrinski (striker, 18 goals in Serbian League last season) and Krsevan Santini (goalkeeper from NK Domžale). A potential discovery of the season is theplaymaker Karol Struski. He is 18 years old and has not made his debut in Ekstraklasa yet, but due to the new rules about young footballers, he will probably be a player of the first eleven. The team looks less impressive than 2-3 years ago, but they can still do a lot.
Final prediction
Somewhere between 4th and 8th place. Big discrepancy, but hard to say what to expect from them. They surely will be in the championship group. Personally, I don't think they will fight for the championship, but this league is unpredictable.

Korona Kielce

Coach: Gino Lettieri Captain: Adnan Kovačević Most caps: Paweł Sobolewski (177, 2007-2016) Top scorer: Jacek Kiełb (38, 2006-2010, 2011-2012, 2013-2015, 2016-2018) Debut: 2005/2006 Biggest achievement: 5th place (3 times: 2005/2006, 2011/2012, 2016/2017) Last season: 10th place Nickname(s): The Buck Knives, The Golden-Blooded Stadium: Kielce City Stadium (15 500) 2018/19 gif of the season: https://streamable.com/ccu3d

Before start of the season Korona was seen as main candidate for relegation (as always) and easily avoided it (also as always). It is already a tradition. Hard to say why journalists criticize the club so much every summer since everything always ends happily, but that's their business. It was the second year of authoritarian German-Italian Gino Lettieri as a coach and the script looked similar - great autumn, poor spring. This time even very poor. From 4th place Korona dropped to 9th and had to play in the relegation group, which was a worse result than in previous 2 years. The positive aspect of spring was the development of Georgia international, Vato Arveladze. The 21-year-old attacking midfielder was the brightest point of the team and without him it would have been even lower in the table. Other prominent players were right-back captain Rymaniak and striker Soriano. Korona's problem was the inconsistency of the squad. Coach Lettieri put up a different lineup every week and for unknown reasons forced terrible defensive midfielder Petrak.
This season
Korona is seen as a candidate for relegation less often than in the past, but some experts don't change traditional opinions. In contrast to the previous years, the exodus of most valuable players was avoided - only the loss of already mentioned Rymaniak and Soriano will be felt. Other departures are footballers who didn't play a big role in the team or were just bad (like hated Petrak, whose leaving was welcomed with an enthusiasm comparable to a great transfer). There are new interesting players such as Erik Pačinda (loaned from Viktoria Plzeň) and Michał Żyro (former forward of Wolverhampton). The transfers are solid and - another novelty - done before the beginning of the season.
Final prediction
Ironically - relegation. Unironically - traditional middle of the table.

Lech Poznań

Coach: Dariusz Żuraw Captain: Darko Jevtić Most caps: Hieronim Barczak (367, 1972-1987) Top scorer: Teodor Anioła (139, 1948-1961) Debut: 1948 Biggest achievement: Champions (7 times: 1982/1983, 1983/1984, 1989/1990, 1991/1992, 1992/1993, 2009/2010, 2014/2015) Last season: 8th place Nickname(s): The Railwayman, The Lechitas Stadium: Poznań City Stadium (41 609) 2018/19 gif of the season: https://streamable.com/8zsje

Have you ever seen a movie "Groundhog Day"? The main character experiences the worst day of his life everyday. Lech's situation is similar, but with a slight difference - if yesterday was bad, today is even worse. And this time it seemed like it was going to be different. Club bought Pedro Tiba from Chaves for €1m and Joao Amaral from Vitoria Setubal for €1,5m (the most expensive transfer to Ekstraklasa ever). They both turned out to be mediocre and not worth so much money. Ivan Durdević was a legend of the club as a footballer, but became a terrible coach. In November, he was replaced by Adam Nawałka, who was a manager of the Poland National Team in 2013-18 period. Everyone thought that Lech will come back to life and join the race for the championship. Nothing could be further from the truth. The team remained average and Nawałka damaged his reputation even more. The 0-4 defeat against Piast coached by Waldemar Fornalik - his predecessor in Poland NT - was especially painful. In March Nawałka was replaced by the reserve team manager, Dariusz Żuraw, who, of course, also did not save this season. The only positive thing for Lech's fans were two wins against Legia, which prevented the rivals from winning the league.
This season
The changes in Lech's squad are huge. Most of people associated with team's failures have left, headed by the clumsy defender Nikola Vujadinovic and disliked defensive midfielder Łukasz Trałka. Among the new players, the greatest hopes are raised by goalkeeper Mickey van der Hart bought from PEC Zwolle. The situation in the attack is unclear. Denmark international striker Christian Gytkjaer is injured and according to rumors, wants to leave. Timur Zhamaletdinov, loaned from CSKA Moscow, will probably play in the starting eleven. Darko Jevtić became the new captain, which caused controversy. The midfielder is not really mentally resilient and does not show any leader's traits. Coach Żuraw remained on his position.
Final prediction
I don't dare to predict anything. Logic says that situation has to be better, but it's Lech, so it can be even worse.

Lechia Gdańsk

Coach: Piotr Stokowiec Captain: Flavio Paixao Most caps: Roman Korynt (207, 1953-1967) Top scorer: Bogdan Adamczyk (36, 1955-1963) Debut: 1949 Biggest achievement: 3rd place (2 times: 1956, 2018/2019) Last season: 3th place Nickname(s): The Lechistas Stadium: Stadium Energa Gdańsk (41 620) 2018/19 gif of the season: https://gfycat.com/pl/closedcheerfulbrocketdeer

Lechia was the biggest flop of 2017/2018 season ending it at 13th position and barely avoiding relegetion. It was shocking, because in previous years they were one of the 4 best teams in Ekstraklasa. When everyone expected Lechia to come back to being an average, something even more shocking happened - they took 3rd place were leader of the table for the vast majority of the season. The club owes its success to coach Piotr Stokowiec, who saved them from the relegation earlier. Lechia relied on defensive style of play and often was unwatchable, but effective. Defenders such as Nalepa, Augustyn and Nunes, who were previously a laughing stock, started to play perfectly. In many matches team played without playmaker and there were 3 defensive midfielders on the pitch. Everything was going great until something broke down at the end. The team lost 5 of the last 8 matches (even with ridiculous Lech). At least Lechia won Polish Cup (1-0 against Jagiellonia in the final).
This season
Lechia looks much stronger than in the previous season. Every player who left club has a better successor. The exception is position of the right-back. Poland U21 team player Karol Fila doesn't have a good substitute after Joao Nunes left. Selling average winger Konrad Michalak to Akhmat Grozny for €1m is the deal of life. The depth of Lechia's squad is impressive and even their second eleven could fight for a presence in the championship group. Only coach Stokowiec can be a cause of concern. After a phenomenal first season in Zagłębie Lubin (also 3rd place) he completely failed in the second and team had to play in the relegation group. We'll see if he drew any conclusions.
Final prediction
TOP 3. I have full confidence in this team and I think that this time they can be even better.

Legia Warsaw

Coach: Aleksandar Vuković Captain: Artur Jędrzejczyk Most caps: Lucjan Brychczy (386, 1954-1972) Top scorer: Lucjan Brychczy (182, 1954-1972) Debut: 1927 Biggest achievement: Champions (13 times: 1955, 1956, 1968/1969, 1969/1970, 1993/1994, 1994/1995, 2001/2002, 2005/2006, 2012/2013, 2013/2014, 2015/2016, 2016/2017, 2017/2018) Last season: Runners-up Nickname(s): The Legionaries, The Militaries Stadium: Polish Army Stadium (31 103) 2018/19 gif of the season: https://streamable.com/hv2kt

For the first time since the 2014/15 season Legia did not become the champion of Poland and given their financial dominance, it is a catastrophic defeat. For most of the season team was managed by the Portuguese Sa Pinto. He started very badly, then for a short moment it seemed like everything will be fine, and then again it was terrible. Apart from being a poor coach Pinto turned out to be also a clown and competed with Smółka for the title of the most irritating coach in Ekstraklasa. Everyone was guilty of Legia's defeats, but not him - even advertising bands and church bells (seriously). In April Pinto was replaced by Aleksandar Vuković - a club legend who repeatedly worked as a temporary coach, but only now became a manager permamently. He did not achieve the goal. The end of the season was embarrassing for the team. Does this mean that Legia was significantly weaker than in previous years? No. They just finally had a rival who knew how to take advantage of their weakness.
This season
There have been some changes in the team. 20-year-old Sebastian Szymański was sold to Dynamo Moscow for €5.5m. Legends such as the aging Miroslav Radović and annoying Michal Kucharczyk are gone. Tomasz Jodłowiec, who won the league as a Piast player, came back from the loan. The defence was strengthened by Igor Lewczuk from Bordeaux and Ivan Obradović from Anderlecht. Players from league rivals - Valerian Gvilia from Górnik and Arvydas Novikovas from Jagiellonia - were also bought. Everything looks great on paper. What could be the problem? The manager. Aleksandar Vuković's Legia is not convincing, and his successor - knowing president Dariusz Miodulski - does not have to be better at all.
Final prediction
TOP 3. I can't imagine them being lower, but winning league isn't obvious. However, second year without championship will be considered a disaster.
