Apple Launches MacBook and Mac Mini Featuring Apple’s Own M1 Chip
Apple launched the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro 13”, and a Mac Mini with Apple’s first foray into chips for laptops and desktops at their core. The brand-new 5nm Apple Silicon chip is called ‘M1,’ and features an 8-core CPU (4 high-performance cores, 4 efficiency cores). Apple claims substantial performance gains leads over Intel-based MacBooks from last generation at a fraction of the power draw. Several professional application vendors, including Adobe, have promised releases for the new Macs in 2021. Read more.
Maxon Cinema 4D Available for New Apple M1-Powered Macs
C4D Professionals looking to hop to Apple will be able to use Maxon Cinema 4D natively on the M1-powered Macs – powering on-the-move creation. Due to the move away from the x86 architecture, applications will need to be released for the ARM-based devices. This particular release makes Cinema 4D the first 3D animation tool for these devices. Blender Cycles Update Brings Performance Improvements for CPU+GPU Rendering in Partnership with AMD
While Cycles already supports using CPU+GPU rendering, there was a problem with it. Since the CPU grabs one tile per processor thread, towards the end, the GPU runs out of tiles while the CPU is still processing the tiles it already started. To mitigate the performance loss here, a commit that allows tile stealing, i.e., stealing the tile from the CPU and handing it to the GPU when it’s idle has now been added – avoiding the scenario where the GPU is idle waiting for the CPU to finish a render. Users are already reporting improved performance numbers after the update. Read more.
Maxon Releases Update for Popular CPU Benchmarking Tool – Cinebench R23 is Now Available
Cinebench is an industry-standard benchmarking application at this point, and Maxon announced a major update to it on November 11th – Cinebench Release 23. The update brings a few much-needed improvements to the benchmark. One of them includes the ability to assess whether the hardware can deliver consistent performance for longer periods of time without encountering thermal limits. Maxon also declared that due to code and compiler changes, Cinebench score values will adjust to new ranges and thus, cannot be compared to scores from previous Cinebench versions. Read more.

Reports of Nvidia RTX 3050 with 2,304 CUDA Cores at 90W
It looks like the flood of rumors about new Nvidia GPUs aren’t stopping anytime soon with yet another leak. The leaker gives out details about a graphics chip that will reportedly be the RTX 3050. For those looking to shop in the sub-$400 price range, this should be good news. That said, stock of Nvidia’s Ampere graphics cards is still a problem.
Nvidia Rumored to Launch RTX 3080Ti in January 2021
In another leak, Nvidia’s plans to offer an RTX 3080Ti were detailed. It is supposedly based on a cut-down version of the RTX 3090 GPU die and will feature 20GB of GDDR6X VRAM. If this rumor is indeed true, it will be the perfect product for those who want to use these GPUs for CUDA rendering tasks without spending over $1500 per card. Now, only if you could actually buy one.
