While Cycles already supports using CPU+GPU rendering, there was a problem with it. Since the CPU grabs one tile per processor thread, towards the end, the GPU runs out of tiles while the CPU is still processing the tiles it already started. To mitigate the performance loss here, a commit that allows tile stealing, i.e., stealing the tile from the CPU and handing it to the GPU when it’s idle has now been added – avoiding the scenario where the GPU is idle waiting for the CPU to finish a render. Users are already reporting improved performance numbers after the update.

Cinebench is an industry-standard benchmarking application at this point, and Maxon announced a major update to it on November 11th – Cinebench Release 23. The update brings a few much-needed improvements to the benchmark. One of them includes the ability to assess whether the hardware can deliver consistent performance for longer periods of time without encountering thermal limits. Maxon also declared that due to code and compiler changes, Cinebench score values will adjust to new ranges and thus, cannot be compared to scores from previous Cinebench versions.
